Bicyclist/Pedestrian Count Results

May 10, 2011, Lewis & Clark County sponsored a tally of bicyclists and pedestrians, at 15 different sites around Helena, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Over that period, using nationally standardized means of counting, over 30 volunteers spotted:

388 Bicyclists
1,043 Pedestrians
Another 18 'others', I assume skateboarders and similar means of self-propulsion

For a grand total of 1,449 folks getting around using their own steam.

A .pdf map (1.4M), drawn by Jason Danielson of Lewis & Clark County, shows the counting sites, and the proportion of cyclists to pedestrians at each site.

A second count is planned for fall. Details follow:

Tour Helena's Centennial Trail

Sunday, May 20, 2011, 10 a.m., leaving from Joslyn and the BNSF railroad tracks.

Bring your bike and get a free two-hour tour of Helena's Centennial Trail, a non-motorized hiker- cyclist-friendly trail and route linking (on the west) Helena's Spring Meadow Lake State Park with, on the east, the non-motorized trail on the north side of Highway 12, connecting East Helena with the Walmart area.

Leading the tour are Paul Montgomery, of Anderson and Montgomery Engineering, project engineer for the Trail, and Bruce Newell, with the City of Helena's Non-Motorized Travel Advisory Council.

This guided tour will be about a 10 mile round-trip, for cyclists only. (Centennial Trail is for pedestrians as well, but to tour the entire path in a reasonable amount of time, this tour is limited to cyclists.) Since much of the trip is on a gravel path, we recommend a bicycle with a minimum of 32mm wide tires. We will leave promptly at 10:00 a.m., and do our best to be back to where we started by noon or 12:30.

A .pdf map of Helena area trails, including the Centennial Trail, is available on the City/County mapping website. Please be patient while it downloads; it is a large file.

See you Sunday!

ALES to TRAILS Centennial Trail Fundraiser

Enjoy great beer, great music, and great company this Friday, May 20, at Helena's first ALES to TRAILS fundraiser. This fundraiser, to benefit Helena's Centennial Trail project, will be held at the Lewis & Clark County Fairgrounds, 5--9 p.m., and features music by the Growlers and the Watercarvers Guild. Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door, and can be purchased at Tread Lightly, Great Divide Cyclery, Fuel Fitness, and the Landmark Company.

Food will be available to purchase at the event - slices of pizza, popcorn and peanuts. Set off great beer with great American-style tapas!

Since beer is being served, this event is limited for those 21 and older.

Please support the completion of Helena's Centennial Trail, connecting Spring Meadow Lake State Park to the East Helena Trail, north-side of Highway 12.
