Bike/Ped Count Project

Helena is joining with the National Bicycle and Pedestrian Documentation Project to start conducting counts and surveys to measure bicycle and pedestrian activity and demand. By doing so Helena will be able to measure the positive benefits of investments in these modes, especially when compared to the other transportation modes such as the private automobile. Results will provide data for use by planners, governments, bicycle and pedestrian professionals, and especially the Helena community commuters!

Counts will be held at 10 different locations throughout the city of Helena. See Map for details.

Benefits of Counts
1. Planners, agency staff, and others will be able to quickly access the latest figures and trends in usage and demand for a variety of types of facilities in a variety of settings. This will be useful for developing estimates of usage for proposed improvements.
2. Researchers and others will be able to use the data to establish correlation between usage and a variety of land use and demographic data.
3. National trends in bicycle and pedestrian activity could be a major annual benchmark in evaluating the success of investments in facilities and programs, and in national trends overall in terms of modal selection and activity.
